Historic Long Melford

Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church is one of the great Suffolk wool churches which stands on a hill at the north end of the village of Long Melford. It is widely acknowldeged to be one of the most magnificent parish churches in the country. Indeed a quick scan of our visitors' book reveals that even hardened tourists are taken aback by the building's beauty and the peace they experience when visiting a site where Christians have worshipped and prayed for over 1000 years.

Kentwell Hall

A timeless Manor House set in acres of stunning, family-friendly gardens and parkland, in the beautiful Suffolk village of Long Melford.

The House: structurally Tudor and successor to the Kentwell Hall mentioned in Domesday Book in 1085.  With later impressive Gothic and classical alterations, mixed with the owners' improvements since 1971 some more ideosyncratic than others.  Fine early armorial and other stained glass,  portraits of Tudor notables and historic tapestries make this lived in family home of interest to all.

The Gardens: romantic moats, extensive lawns, walled gardens, massive clipped yews, espaliered fruit trees and giant cedars surround the House.  Over 30 acres of tranquil breathing space, with a surprise to delight the senses around every corner.
The Moat House: this rare survivor of a 15th Century service building rises sheer from the moat and contains our working dairy, bakery, brewhouse and stillroom.

Melford Hall

It’s fair to say that Melford Hall has had its share of trials and tribulations, but it’s thanks to many generations from medieval monks to the Hyde Parker family who still live here, that this home still stands.

Around every corner there’s a new twist in the story – from Beatrix Potter sketches to collections of naval paintings and Chinese porcelain – everything tells a story and everyone has left their mark.

Devastated by fire in 1942, it was nurtured back to life by the Hyde Parker family and it remains their much loved family home to this day. It is their stories of family life at Melford – from visits by their cousin Beatrix Potter through to our visitors today that make this house more than bricks and mortar.
